On Friday, June 6th, students in Grade 4/5 classes and many parent volunteers worked hard to beautify our school grounds. As a team, we raked, dug, planted, constructed, and cleaned our school grounds. The project was connected to our learning in Science, specifically Plant Growth and Changes. We also saw many connections to our first unit of the year, Waste and our World, as this day allowed us to act responsibly toward our environment.
We found that learning was a big part of our day no matter what the activity. While preparing tree beds, we observed large horizontal roots. We were not sure if these were taproots or fibrous roots. Turns out that tree root systems begin as taproots and then mature into fibrous roots!
While at the flower box and bench construction site, both students and parents were using problem solving skills because the instructions did not match our pile of lumber. These are only a few examples of the learning that happened outside of our classrooms!
A big thank you for all the volunteer help on this day-from lending out tools to volunteering your time! As a school community we appreciate the cooperation and teamwork that went into our School Beautification Project!
